The Impact of our Faith…

June 23, 2009

Years ago, I read a book by Bruce Bickel and Stan Jantz called Why Jesus Matters. The book had a profound impact on my life. In addition to the magnificent grace and mercy that comes to us through the sacrificial life of Jesus, our faith has had a tremendous impact on our world. From governments and our calendar system to hospitals and literature, we can trace countless systems, thoughts, and institutions back to our faith. Earlier this week, I was reading from another book when I came across this: “ …until 1766 eating places were always part of a hotel or an inn. In that year, a chef named Boulanger opened the first public dining place in Paris. The owner placed a sign in front of his establishment. The sign bore an adaptation of the scripture from Matthew 11:28: “Come unto me, all ye that are hungry and I shall restore you.” From the word restore (in French restaurerai) the establishment became known as “restaurant,” and this name has since been applied to eateries the world over.” Now just imagine…if our faith can change something as simple as the name of a place we eat, can we even begin to contemplate the impact it can and does have on changed lives each and every day?
