Happy birthday to us!

August 28, 2007

Hey guys – Just a few bullets from SS class…

First of all mad props to Mike for the new blog.  I like it, and maybe will start my own.

Since last Sunday was our class’ 1 yr. birthday, I thought it would be a great time to look at where we’ve been, where we are now, and where do we want our class to go.

Acts 2:42 gives a biblical guideline for where the heart of a ministry should be.  “And they should hold to the disciples teachings, have fellowship, break bread together, and pray.”

The first mentioned is teaching biblical doctrine.  But the bible is not something to compartmentalize on Sunday morning – it is “living and active” and useful for “teaching”.  I think this teaching is what many people are looking for… how to do LIFE.  Without an intentional focus on teaching scripture, so many people fall away.  What I find interesting is that C.S. Lewis says “How many of the people you know who have fallen away were argued away from Christ?” (as in by a Mormon, Jew, etc.) – The fact is not many.  Most people get, as Shaun mentioned, complacent.  John Piper has an idea why… People may not realize it but everyone is battling competing desires.  There is the desire to love Christ and there is the desire to do evil. Born with original sin draws us towards evil (See Romans).  And “the only way you will not have evil desires is if you desire something else more.”  Therefore, the Christian life is not about decisions at all (as commonly thought) but instead competing desires.  So in the coming year, I would love us to have an intentional focus for a sustained desire for Christ.

Secondly, fellowship.  We’ve done pretty well with this, but can always do better.  I will make an intentional effort to get to a deeper relationship with each one of you.  I would encourage you guys to feel like this is your class.  If someone is not in class, everyone call them and let them know we missed them.  If you have ideas to minister to others, lets do it.  It’s all yours.

Lastly, we’re pretty good at breaking bread 😉 and we’re always working on prayer.

Big picture I think our goal, which Jeffrey articulated, was that we will grow most effectively by “doing life together” and then letting this permeate LBC as we grow closer all at the same time.

** One last note:  I’ve got some thoughts on SS series to explore for the coming months. Since L&R is over, lets see if we can chew thru James.  It tackles some tough issues which give a contrast to 1 Cor. and Romans (like justification).  After that some thoughts would be a NT survey, basically looking at how does the whole NT work. Or, there is a series of like 12 pictures which come with a lesson each which tie the whole bible together, Gen. to Rev. and explains how it all works. Or, I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how different denominations (not religions) differ.  Anyways, let
me know your thoughts for after James.

In Christ,
